Dunyu Hall

Dunyu Hall is a cultural heritage site protected by the Suzhou Municipal Government.

Dunyu Hall is located on Dongxin Street in Dongshan Town and is the most well-preserved residential building among the Ming Dynasty structures in Dongshan. The hall faces due south and is enclosed by brick walls on all sides, covering a total area of approximately 2,500 square meters. Along its central axis are a screen wall, gate wall, sedan-chair hall, main hall, main building, and rear hall, all separated by courtyards, stone gateways, and partition walls, forming individual courtyards. On the left and right are connected service corridors, wing rooms, and a library building. The main hall has three central rooms spanning seven rafters (10 meters) in depth, with an additional 4-meter rear room. At the center of the main ridge beam in the hall, there is a traditional Suzhou-style painting known as “a reversed bundle draped over the beam.” Within the bundle are three diamond-shaped blocks forming the pattern “Three Victories,” at the center of which are depicted a brush and an ingot — symbols meaning “surely to rise in rank.” These auspicious images are rendered in warm tones such as brown, red, and yellow, contrasted with cool colors like blue, green, and purple, all divided by black and white lines to create a striking color scheme. At the “brush and ingot victory” motif, a touch of gold is used, which glimmers vividly against the dark roof space, adding brilliance. The overall color palette is rich yet tasteful, exuding great elegance. This type of decorative pattern is most commonly seen in the Dongshan area.

It now houses the Dongshan Celebrity Museum, which displays information across five sections: Dongshan’s historical sites, notable figures from Dongshan, clan heritage, acts of historical charity, and the region’s legacy in compiling local chronicles.
