Shanghai Jiading Ye Pond

Shanghai Jiading Ye Pond is located on Qinghe Road in Jiading Town, Jiading District. In the second year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1645), Qing troops besieged Jiading County. The scholar-officials Hou Congzeng and Huang Tuyao led a volunteer army to defend the city. After more than ten days of fighting, when the city fell, Hou Congzeng fled to his home, passed by Ye Pond, and drowned himself in the pond along with his two sons. In 1962, a monument was erected at the original site of Ye Pond in their memory.

Jiading Town Subdistrict: Before the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, an ancient coastline formed at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and human activity already existed along the Lianqi River (now the area around the West Gate Old Street). By the Tianjian era (502–519) of the Liang Dynasty, a settlement had formed. During the Tang Dynasty, the ancient town of Jiading got its name from the Lianqi River and was called Lianqi Market. On the ninth day of the twelfth month of the tenth year of the Jiading era in the Southern Song Dynasty (January 7, 1218), the county seat was established and named Jiading after the era name, a name that has been used ever since. In September 2000, Jiading Town was restructured from a town into a subdistrict.
