Although you’ll definitely have to join a long queue, everyone here waits willingly. Established in the 26th year of the Guangxu Emperor’s reign (1900) within the City God Temple, Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant is undoubtedly the most historic century-old snack spot. It was founded by Wu Xiangsheng from Nanxiang Town in Jiading County, who partnered with chef Qi Qiurong to open a shop here, serving xiao long bao as their signature dish. Unexpectedly, due to its thin wrappers, generous filling, and juicy, flavorful texture, it not only gained immense local fame but also became renowned overseas. Today, it remains the restaurant’s star dessert and a must-try delicacy for visitors to Shanghai.

The Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant located in Yu Garden is the flagship store, always crowded with people waiting in line.

Currently, Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant has been expanded and renovated while retaining its historic architectural features. Situated right inside Yu Garden, dining here naturally offers a view of the elegant and serene garden scenery. The entire restaurant has three floors: the first floor is the takeout area, serving only pork xiao long bao. But even so, no matter when you come, you’ll have to join the lengthy queue.

The classic Chinese-style Yu Garden is a must-visit attraction in Shanghai.

Nanxiang xiao long bao features thin wrappers and generous fillings.

The second floor houses the Boat Hall and Changxinglou. The former serves only crab roe xiao long bao, where you can even watch staff shuck fresh crabs—the entire preparation process is transparent and freshly made. The latter offers pork, crab meat, and crab roe xiao long bao. The third floor’s Dingxinglou is the most upscale dining area, featuring not only a tranquil ambiance but also a full variety of dim sum.

There are many branches of Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant in Shanghai, but the flagship store remains the most popular among tourists.
