Zhuzhai Wojing is situated at the intersection of East Zhuzhai Street in Huacao Town, Minhang District. It is the only well-preserved historical site in Shanghai that commemorates the people’s resistance against Japanese pirates. Starting from the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasties, Japanese pirates frequently invaded China’s coastal areas. The atrocities committed by the invaders sparked fierce resistance among the people of Zhuzhai. They engaged in life-and-death battles with the pirates and threw the slain enemies into the wells in front of or behind their homes—hence the name “Wojing” (Japanese Pirates’ Well). Thanks to the brave resistance of the locals, by the 38th year of the Jiajing reign (1559 AD), pirate raids in Shanghai were completely eradicated. Zhuzhai Wojing covers an area of 165 square meters and is surrounded by a stone pavilion. It is open to the public free of charge. Group visits require prior reservation, and the site offers free event space for various ceremonial activities for youth.
