At around 2 a.m. on January 31, an accident occurred in a residential community near Hongqiao Road and Shuicheng Road, where a boy fell from the fifth-floor window of his home. Fortunately, the falling boy was slowed down by obstacles such as an awning and clothes racks, and ultimately got caught on a protruding iron railing, emerging completely unharmed. On the ground nearby, a pink folding umbrella lay. It is reported that the boy may have been imitating a parachute game on his mobile phone when he fell holding the umbrella.
Reporters arrived at the scene at Jin Yuan residential compound yesterday morning. Residents of Unit 201 said they heard noises outside their window and, upon opening it, spotted a boy hanging on the fence. The residents spoke to the boy, asking if he had fallen from upstairs and which unit he lived in. The child playfully responded, “I won’t tell you.” Meanwhile, the boy’s fall triggered the wire security alarm, prompting security guards from the adjacent Jin Yuan Apartments to notice and report the incident before coming over. After finding the child, the guards and neighbors worked together to rescue him and rushed him to the hospital.
Mr. Li, director of the community residents' committee, told reporters that the boy’s parents are divorced, and he came to Shanghai to spend the New Year with his mother. His mother, a businesswoman who is often busy, had to go on a business trip on the second day of the Lunar New Year and asked the boy’s aunt to look after him. According to information the aunt shared with community officials, the boy had been playing a "parachute drop" game on her phone recently, which may have prompted the imitation. A resident from Unit 58, fourth floor, also told reporters this wasn’t the first time the boy had been in danger. Around 10 p.m. on January 29, the resident saw the boy leaning out of the window from their balcony, and in shock, reached out to catch him. After going upstairs and finding no one answered the door, the resident had no choice but to temporarily place the boy in the care of the building’s guard. Reporters noticed a note posted at the entrance of the boy’s residence that read: “For the missing child, please inquire at the guardhouse.”
At Fudan University Children's Hospital in Minhang District, reporters learned that doctors found the boy to be almost unharmed, and he had already been taken home by his mother, who had returned to Shanghai.
