Taipei’s Gongguan “Pedestrian Paradise” Praised by Public; Extension Until January Next Year

The “Holiday Gongguan Slow/Walking Zone,” which has been piloted in Taipei’s Gongguan commercial district since August this year, has received strong public support since its launch. However, many local businesses remain opposed. Recently, the Taipei City Department of Transportation announced that the trial walking zone period will be extended until January next year, while the implementation hours will also be adjusted starting from the 22nd.

The “Gongguan Slow Walking Zone” covers Section 3, Lane 286, Section 3, Lane 316, Section 3, Alley 8 of Lane 316, Section 4, Lane 24, and Section 4, Alley 12 of Lane 24. It is designated for pedestrians and cyclists only from 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm on weekends and holidays. Since its implementation, it has been praised by most members of the public. The Taipei City Department of Transportation has also announced that the walking zone will continue until January 11, 2015.

The Department of Transportation stated that, considering that some shop owners still oppose the measure, the walking zone operating hours will be adjusted starting from the 22nd to run from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm on each weekend and holiday. On election day, the 29th, the walking zone will start at 4:00 pm. In the future, the department will continue to gather public feedback and review the policy.
