Shanghai Laowai Street is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The "Laowai Street" scenic area in Shanghai, a leisure landmark on Hongmei Road, was the first in the city to bring together flavors from over a dozen countries along a single street.

The street features Chinese restaurants covering six major cuisines including Shanghainese, Southern Anhui, and Xinjiang, as well as 23 themed restaurants and bars from 14 countries—Japan, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, the United States, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Greece, and more. Another reason for its popularity is that this was once part of Mao Zedong’s 101 Train Special Line railway. With urban development, the 101 railway line was decommissioned, and the remaining old factory buildings were transformed into international restaurants and bars. Originally called Hongmei Road Leisure Street, Shanghai "Laowai Street" stretches about 500 meters, connecting Hongxu Road and Hongmei Road at either end. Designed with European-style charm, the winding street is lined with lush trees, and its forks are adorned with modern sculptures, fountains, and small hillside waterfalls. Walking down the street, signs in various languages make you feel like you’re in a mini “United Nations.” Over a dozen countries’ flavors are condensed here, with several Chinese restaurants serving Shanghainese, Southern Anhui, and Northwest cuisines, alongside themed restaurants and bars from Japan, Thailand, India, Iran, Mexico, and more than ten other countries. Each restaurant showcases the characteristics of its home country through decor and menu offerings, and over half of the dining establishments are owned and operated by foreigners.
