The Former Ula City

The Former Ula City is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Former Ula City is located in Jiujie Village, Ula Street Town, Longtan District, Jilin City, Jilin Province, and is a heritage site from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The ancient city covers a total area of about 900,000 square meters and is divided into three layers of city walls: inner, middle, and outer. At the center stands a large architectural platform base, and each section of the city wall is surrounded by a moat. The buildings were constructed using finely cut bluestone bricks, and the decorations feature a large number of brick carvings and stone carvings, reflecting the artistic achievements of Manchu architecture in the late Qing period while also showcasing the distinctive features of Ula Manchu architecture. Starting in 1657, Emperor Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty established the Dashing Ula General Office in Ula Street, which became the largest tribute collection and management institution in the country. From the first General Mata to the last General Wuyinbao at the end of the Qing Dynasty, over a span of 254 years, there were 31 individuals serving as 36 generals, with the highest-ranking general reaching the third-rank official level. During this period, "Ula" flourished immensely, becoming a renowned city in northern China and an important transportation hub.

This city was once the capital of the Ula tribe, one of the four Hulun tribes (Ula, Hada, Yehe, and Huifa) during the Ming Dynasty. As the Dashing Ula General Office, "Ula" was a specialized management institution that collected and delivered tribute items for the Qing imperial court. Alongside Jiangning (Nanjing), Suzhou, and Hangzhou, it was known as one of the four major tribute bases. Emperor Kangxi visited here twice during his eastern tours.

The Former Ula City is a testament to the tribute history of Dashing Ula and holds significant artistic and historical research value.

In May 2013, it was designated by the State Council as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
