Highlights It is believed that Grossmünster Cathedral was first built during the Carolingian dynasty, and its distinctive twin towers have made it a city symbol of Zurich. At 6 p.m. on the evening of Sechseläuten, the cathedral bells are rung. The very first chime marks the official announcement of the arrival of spring. Introduction The oldest part of the cathedral is the crypt, which was constructed between the late 1st century and the early 12th century. The rest of the structure was built during the Romanesque period, with interior sculptures dating back to the 12th century. Today, the cathedral is part of the University of Zurich’s theological faculty. In the 16th century, religious reformer Huldrych Zwingli delivered speeches here, advocating the idea of praying without ceasing even while working.
