Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich is a lake in Switzerland, located in the southwestern part of the canton of Zurich. The city of Zurich lies at its northwestern end and is the largest city along the lake. The lake's water primarily comes from the Linth River (Linth), which originates from glaciers in the Alps of the canton of St. Gallen. The Escher Canal, completed in 1811, diverts it to Lake Walen, and then via the Linth Canal, completed in 1816, it flows into the eastern end of Lake Zurich. The lake’s waters exit at its northwest end as the Limmat River, which runs through Zurich. To the east of the lake lie two smaller lakes: Greifensee and Pfäffikersee.

Lake Zurich is 4 kilometers wide, about 39 kilometers long, and covers an area of 88 square kilometers, with a maximum depth of 143 meters. A full tour around the lake takes several hours. The scenery around Lake Zurich is stunning. Cobblestone paths along the shore, built in a medieval style, allow visitors to stroll by the lake, swim, have picnics, sunbathe, and take boat trips across the lake. The banks of Lake Zurich are extremely picturesque. Cruising between the beautiful towns on either side of the lake is a truly delightful experience. The lake is home to many water birds, the most famous and recognizable of which are swans. Flocks of pigeons and seagulls on the lakeshore can often be seen soaring in the air, playing with the swans on the water, or foraging and frolicking on the squares by the lake. When visitors come to feed them, it often attracts groups of seabirds competing for food. The harmonious coexistence of people and birds along the lakeside forms a unique and beautiful scene.
