Zurich Botanical Garden

The Zurich Botanical Garden is affiliated with the University of Zurich. Established in 1977 on the basis of the Schonau Park, it covers an area of 53,000 square meters. Originally a private garden, it has retained much of its original appearance over the years with only minor changes, and many ancient trees have been preserved. The old botanical garden is located in the city center at Schanzengraben, which was the site of the Department of Systematic Botany at the University of Zurich. In 1834, the area was expanded by 27 acres, and this site has now become a city park.

The exhibition greenhouse was built in 1974, covering an area of 1,000 square meters. Its Plexiglas covering material ensures sufficient light enters the greenhouse while preventing heat accumulation inside during the summer. It consists of three domed greenhouses: the tropical greenhouse, which stands 17 meters high, features tall palm plants, exotic vines, and a rich variety of economic plants such as cocoa and Panama hat plants, as well as more than 1,300 types of orchids. The subtropical greenhouse, 9.5 meters high, displays plants from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Mediterranean region, and Central and South America. The succulent greenhouse, 10 meters high, mainly cultivates plants native to South Africa and Mexico. The old botanical garden also houses an octagonal greenhouse built in 1851, which has become a heritage site and is still used for exhibitions, theater performances, and concerts.
