Pingtung’s “Beidawushan Mountain” Reopens – Enjoy Sea of Clouds and Twin Ghost Lakes Scenery
Beidawushan Mountain, one of Taiwan’s Five Great Mountains, was temporarily closed due to severe damage to its hiking trails caused by torrential rains from Typhoon Fenghuang. The trails have recently been reopened after restoration efforts by the Pingtung Forest District Office. Officials also noted that now is the best time to visit Beidawushan, as the scenery is at its most beautiful.

Typhoon Vamco, this year’s 19th typhoon, is heading toward Japan, affecting flights from Taiwan to the country. Established in 1894 during the Meiji era in Miyazaki Prefecture, Uifune has been serving unagi rice for 117 years. It is renowned for grilling eel over binchotan charcoal, using a proprietary sauce passed down for over a century, and for having almost no fish bones. The restaurant is usually packed during regular meal times, and during the summer months of July and August, the outdoor wait can exceed 100 people.

I was debating whether to grab an ekiben (train bento) or eat something quick from a street vendor when—right in the alley across from the Ueno Station entrance—I spotted the one place I’d always wanted to try back in Taiwan but never got around to queuing for: Menya Musashi. Without hesitation, I walked right in.
