Visit Sanhe Ancient Town in Hefei, Anhui, to experience its historic “Eight Ancient Sights”

The well-knownSanhe Ancient Towntourist area is located in the central part of Anhui Province, on the popular tourist route that includes the famed Huangshan and Jiuhua Mountain. With a long history, the name of Sanhe first appeared in the Zuo Zhuan (Commentary of Zuo), dating back over 2,500 years, leaving behind the “Eight Ancient Sights”: ancient streets, ancient bridges, ancient alleys, ancient houses, ancient teahouses, ancient stages, ancient temples, ancient city walls, and ancient trading ports. It is recognized as a Famous Historical and Cultural Town in China and one of the Best Tourist Towns in Anhui, also listed among Hefei’s “New Top Ten Scenic Spots.”

Sanhe Ancient Town got its name because it is traversed by three rivers: the Fengle River, Hangbu River, and Xiaonan River, earning it the reputation of being the “Ancient Town in Central Anhui, a Millennium Water Village.” The town covers an area of 70 square kilometers with a population of 72,000, including the Sanhe Town scenic area spanning 4.71 square kilometers with over 30,000 people, while the ancient town scenic area itself is 3 square kilometers.

According to the Anhui Tourism Bureau, Sanhe is the birthplace of the local Hefei opera genre “Lu Opera” (which has been designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage), earning it the title of the Hometown of Lu Opera. The classic Lu Opera play “Xiao Cidian” is set here, and traditional performances such as dragon lantern dances, dry boat shows, and dragon boat races are still preserved locally. Sanhe also offers distinctive culinary delights, with “Sanhe Cuisine” being a fine example of Huizhou cuisine. Traditional dishes and local snacks have won high praise from diners.
