Boarding in a cave? 3 uniquely designed airports in Europe and the Americas

Whether train stations or airports, these places are not only hubs for transporting passengers but also important stages for architects to showcase their design talents through both exterior and interior decoration. The Japanese travel website“TRiPORT”has selected three airports around the world that they believe have the most impressive terminal interior designs.

When it comes to uniquely decorated airport terminals, the geometrically designed spaces inside Wellington Airport resemble a cave filled with black lines. Though slightly pressurizing, the atmosphere is intense, leaving many visitors with a deep impression. This terminal even has a cool nickname—“The Rock.”

As the sixth largest airport in Europe, to handle nearly 40 million passengers annually, Barajas Airport has expanded to include four terminals. What impressed TRiPORT the most was the streamlined design in Terminal 4, where golden waves seem to ripple across the ceiling, creating a surprising experience for visitors as soon as they arrive in Madrid.

As the fourth largest international airport in the United States, O'Hare International Airport alone has 53 gates in its Terminal 1, requiring two separate buildings to manage the flow. The underground passage connecting these two buildings features infinitely extending curved lines along the ceiling. Its surreal design makes many travelers feel as if they are walking through a time tunnel.
