The Ugly Duckling’s Journey: Located in the core area of the ancient Wulanbutong Battlefield at the southwestern edge of Hexigten Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, the Hongshan Army Horse Farm turns into a dazzling oil painting when autumn arrives. When you visit, wake up early one morning before dawn and head up the mountain to watch the sunrise—the best spot on the farm for this. From the mountaintop, the entire grassland seems to lie beneath your feet. A refreshing morning breeze blows gently, and waves of emerald-green roll across the meadow. Gazing into the distance, the grassland merges seamlessly with the sky, marked by a golden line stretching infinitely on both sides. As the sun gradually rises, the vast clouds in the sky turn shades of pink, drifting toward us from afar. In an instant, the scene transforms dramatically, full of ever-changing beauty. Light and shadow sweep across the grassland, instantly brightening trees, grasses, and flowers wherever they touch. Trust us, the sunrise here will not disappoint.

Aside from the horse farm, the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall is also a favorite among photographers. Built on perilous ridges and steep mountains for military purposes in ancient times, this stretch of the wall winds and twists majestically. Compared to the Badaling section, Jinshanling boasts even more imposing grandeur. In 1992, Asian daredevil Kao Chin-Liang successfully drove a motorcycle over the Great Wall here, adding a brilliant chapter to Jinshanling’s legacy.

Transportation: Fly from Guangzhou to Beijing, then take a long-distance bus from Xizhimen in Beijing to Weichang County. After arriving in Weichang County, transfer to a local minibus to reach the Hongshan Army Horse Farm.

Accommodation: There are many guesthouses, hotels, and restaurants at the Hongshan Army Horse Farm, making dining and lodging very convenient—you can choose according to your preferences and budget. Options range from Japanese-style villas costing over 1,000 yuan per night and standard rooms at around 100 yuan, to various privately run guesthouses that are relatively affordable and reasonably clean.
