Evergreen Park is the first comprehensive park in the urban area of our city, built in 1959. It is located in the city center and currently covers an area of 6.3 hectares. In 1966, it was renamed People’s Park, but reverted to Evergreen Park in 1982. In the 1960s, the park had only two types of animals, but gradually added peacocks, coypus, wolves, and more. A greenhouse was built in 1961, Zhichun Pavilion and the circular garden path were constructed in 1964 along with the introduction of brown bears, and an artificial hill was built in 1965. Through the efforts of the park’s management over the years, there are now over ten scenic spots within the park. The entire park features interconnected pathways and picturesque scenery, with nearly 100 types of plants totaling 3,199 individual trees, and 45 species of animals comprising over 500 individuals, providing citizens with an elegant environment for leisure and recreation.

The park gate stands 9 meters high and 40 meters wide, featuring a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles and an imposing presence. Facing the northwest, it forms a beautiful urban vista together with the Cultural Square and the Museum at the heart of Chifeng City.

The northern part of the park consists of artificially created gentle undulations, where winding paths paved with bluestone slabs wind between rolling earthen mounds, and the rest is covered by lush, carpet-like lawns. Scattered across these green lawns are various shrubs, as well as rockeries, totems, and small garden ornaments. At the easternmost part of the micro-terrain stands an ancient pavilion — Zhichun Pavilion. Built in 1964, it was once resplendent, with dragons and phoenixes carved on its beams, arches, and brackets. During a certain period, the pavilion was painted entirely red, but it was renovated in 1998. Just past the main gate lies a wooded area called “Forest of Hundred Trees.” This grove contains over a hundred species of trees, some of which are nearly a hundred years old. Towering pines and ancient, venerable lilac trees each display their unique character. Every day, locals gather here to practice tai chi, martial arts, and other exercises, enjoying the fresh air of nature. One of the park’s main attractions is the artificial hill, located in the central part of the park. To the east of the hill lies a peach orchard, which bursts into brilliant bloom every year after the Qingming Festival. The branches are laden with vibrant, eye-catching peach blossoms, filling the entire park with a rich floral fragrance. A hexagonal pavilion named “Autumn Charm Pavilion” sits atop the hill, while at its base lies a pond called “Goose Pond,” where white-feathered, red-footed geese play in the water, adding a touch of pastoral charm. To the west of the hill is a newly built flower bed, home to over 20 varieties of exotic flowers and plants, complemented by nearly 100 species of accompanying trees.

Visiting Evergreen Park, observing the animals is a major highlight. The park is now home to 45 species of animals, totaling over 500 individuals. These include 0 macaques, 6 large carnivores, over 200 large birds, over 200 small birds, …

… and 45 other herbivorous or omnivorous animals.

The Carnivore House houses 6 large carnivores, including 3 African lions — one adult and two cubs — introduced from Shijiazhuang and Tangshan. There is also one purebred Siberian tiger, a 5-year-old male with the adorable name “Dabao,” imported from Tianjin Zoo, and two leopards. The Carnivore House opened to the public in 2000, filling a historical gap in the region by being the first to offer visitors the chance to see large carnivorous animals, and has since become very popular with local residents.

To the west of the artificial hill and east of the Carnivore House lies the Waterfowl Pavilion. The pavilion is home to 10 species of waterfowl, with over 80 individuals, including white-naped cranes, ruddy shelducks, bean geese, demoiselle cranes, and swans.

The Free-Range Enclosure is located in the eastern section of the park, covering approximately 2,000 square meters. It houses 15 species and over 350 animals. The enclosure integrates garden landscaping, small ornaments, and water features, allowing the animals to roam freely. Visitors can get up close with adorable creatures such as emus, blue peafowl, deer, and guineafowl. The landscape is naturally harmonious, creating an atmosphere of peaceful coexistence between humans and nature.

Huafang Garden is located to the north of the Free-Range Enclosure, and the two gardens are integrated. Huafang Garden displays various potted plants and flowers. Within the garden is a peony garden that, every summer solstice, bursts into a riot of colors and fragrances, making it a delightful spot for relaxation. Evergreen Park is the Chifeng park with the most amusement offerings, featuring two playgrounds and one roller skating rink. The amusement facilities include 13 types of rides and activities for all ages — large, medium, and small — such as bumper cars, electric carts, children’s castles, and moon rockets, meeting the diverse needs of visitors of different age groups.

Evergreen Park is centrally located in the city with convenient transportation. The north gate faces the Chifeng Bus Terminal. It is also an important venue for local residents to relax, have fun, and enjoy green spaces. As living standards continue to…

… improve, people also have higher expectations for the park’s environment and attractions. Therefore, in future urban development, greater investment in park construction must be made to promote the development of modern cities, enhance the overall structure of green urban environments, and meet the cultural and recreational needs of city residents.
