Dewysburg Castle

Dewysburg Castle was built in 1909 on a hilltop in a valley by a baron. Most of the materials used in its construction were imported from Germany, and the workers were hired from Italy, Sweden, and Ireland. After the outbreak of World War I, the baron joined the German army and eventually died in battle. His wife never returned to the castle after that, and following the war, Dewysburg Castle was sold to a Swede.

In 1970, Dewysburg Castle was returned to Namibia and opened to the public in 1991. The castle houses a collection of antiques, armor, and paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the exterior of Dewysburg Castle may appear modest, the interior decoration gives off a cozy vibe. It features well-preserved bedrooms, lounges, a dining room, bathrooms, and a pavilion. The clever placement of windows allows sunlight to stream into the rooms, while the thick, solid stone walls keep the interior cool during the summer. Two fireplaces also ensure warmth in winter. On the walls hang two ceremonial swords and military sabers, along with some paintings. The interior is exquisitely decorated yet offers a refreshing and unique feel.
