Kolmanskop

Kolmanskop is located in the Namib Desert in southern Namibia, just a few kilometers from the port town of Lüderitz. It is an abandoned city (ghost town) in Namibia and one of the area’s popular tourist attractions.

Soon after, a diamond rush swept through Lüderitz, drawing large numbers of diamond hopefuls to the Namibian desert. In its wake, the small settlement of Kolmanskop rapidly developed into a typical German-style town, complete with schools, a hospital, entertainment venues, and extensive residential areas. It became the first African town to have a tram system, and the Southern Hemisphere’s first X-ray machine was also operated here.

However, the good times didn’t last. With the rise of the Oranjemund mining area and a significant drop in diamond prices after World War I, this once-thriving town gradually fell into decline. By 1956, the last residents had left, leaving Kolmanskop completely abandoned and swallowed by sand dunes, turning it into a true ghost town.
