Alcalá Gate

Introduction   Alcalá Gate is one of the few remaining ancient city gates in Madrid. Built in 1788 and designed by architect Sabatini, it was constructed to honor “Madrid’s most outstanding mayor,” Charles III.

Alcalá Gate stands in the city center's Plaza de la Independencia, at the start of the road leading to Alcalá, right next to Retiro Park. The gate is in the Neoclassical style and takes the form of a grand Roman triumphal arch, featuring five passageways — three semicircular arches and two flat ones — making it an unprecedented architectural masterpiece of 18th-century Europe.  Transportation   Address: Plaza de la Independencia
