Europe’s Ultimate Tax Refund Paradise: A Seven-Star Shopping Experience in Madrid

Common shopping destinations include London in the UK, Paris in France, Munich in Germany, Milan in Italy, Lisbon in Portugal, and more... Here's a great stop you shouldn't miss for luxury brand shopping and tax refunds in Europe: Madrid. Spain is one of the fashion capitals with one of the highest tax refund rates—up to nearly 16%, surpassing the countries mentioned above. Furthermore, among European countries, Spain has no import tariffs, which also makes luxury goods relatively cheaper.

To promote the capital city of Madrid as Europe’s seven-star shopping paradise, the Spanish government has arranged a one-stop premium shopping service for Chinese travelers visiting the country, aiming to provide them with the most convenient way to shop and claim tax refunds all in one place.

Aside from having the highest tax refund percentage, here are two new shopping updates to share with you:

1. One-Stop Seven-Star Shopping Experience(Recommended for those who don’t have much time to explore)
Spain’s largest department store group, El Corte Inglés, in response to Madrid’s government initiative, has designated its 100,000 square-meter flagship store located at the Nuevos Ministerios metro station as the hub for VIP one-stop services. It claims to be the largest department store in all of Europe, offering over 8,000 domestic and international brands—from a bottle of water to furniture, you can find everything here. You can also get almost all luxury brands in one place without having to run around looking for them. Before shopping, travelers can obtain a 10% discount card at the information desk with their passport. Coupled with a 15.7% tax refund, the savings are truly significant.

What does the seven-star shopping experience include?
- 10% exclusive rebate (available at the information desk with your passport)
- Chinese-language tax refund service counter (dedicated windows can also be arranged for groups)
- Taste wine and authentic snacks
- On-site Chinese shopping consultants

2. Chinese App for Planning Your Madrid City Trip via Mobile

Here’s an introduction to this free downloadable Simplified Chinese version of the Madrid travel and shopping guide. I personally find it extremely useful—not only does it explain tax refunds and shopping, but it also includes introductions to fashion brands, art galleries, restaurants, hotels, bars, nightclubs, and even museum event schedules. Use this app to add all the places you want to visit to your “itinerary,” and upon arrival, you can instantly search for nearby attractions to check out.
