A century-old Spanish hotel brings you back to classic cuisine
What does Madrid in Spain make you feel? Romantic? Or passionate? The century-old hotel in Madrid, Hotel Ritz Madrid, will invite the renowned Spanish female singer Olga Maria Ramos to perform at the hotel in October, kicking off a year-long celebration.
The hotel’s executive chef, Jorge Gonzales, will also reinterpret a series of selected delicacies from Goya Restaurant, reflecting the evolution of culinary styles over the past century. For example, the French Centre Périgueux beef tenderloin served at the 1936 New Year’s Eve dinner will make a comeback, taking guests on a culinary journey from 1910 to the present.
Hotel Ritz Madrid celebrates its 100th anniversary on October 2 this year. A special accommodation package is offered—guests who book a stay for three nights or more will enjoy the first night for just 100 euros (subject to room availability). The package also includes daily buffet breakfast. The promotion runs from October 1, 2010, to September 2011 (excluding December 28 to January 1), with classic room rates starting from 535 euros per night. Another highlight event planned for 2010 is a centenarian tea party, where Hotel Ritz will invite Madrid residents over 100 years old to an afternoon tea gathering and share a specially made birthday cake.
Hotel Ritz Madrid was originally conceived by King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who was celebrating his royal wedding but found that Madrid clearly lacked luxurious accommodation. Thus, he decided to create a hotel that could meet the needs of uniquely discerning travelers and entrusted the legendary hotel entrepreneur César Ritz with its design and construction. The opening ceremony in 1902 was extremely grand, attended by numerous members of the Spanish royal family, such as King Alfonso XIII, Queen Ena, the Queen Mother, and Prime Minister Canalejas.
