The history of Spain’s seasonal transhumance festival is long-standing. In the early days, Spanish shepherds would move their livestock seasonally from north to south for grazing, and the grazing routes were locally known as transhumance paths. In 1273, the then King of Spain, based on the importance, geographical location, and usability of these transhumance routes, established royal ordinances to protect and manage them. Later, these routes protected under royal decree came to be known as the Royal Transhumance Routes.
