Alcalá de Henares University, also known as the University of Complutense, was one of the most important cultural and academic centers in early modern Europe and a base for the global dissemination of Spanish culture. It was the world’s first city planned as a university town, established in the early 16th century by Cardinal Cisneros. Alcalá de Henares served as a model for the ideal urban communities that Spanish missionaries later brought to the Americas, and it also provided a design template for universities across Europe and the world.

The new model of Alcalá de Henares University was based on the concept of a “university city.” It was the first city in the world planned as such, where the idea of the "City of God" as an idealized concept was materially and physically realized for the first time, becoming the prototype of the modern university. Thanks to well-established systems for training, supervising, and motivating faculty, in the 16th century, the University of Alcalá, along with the Universities of Salamanca and Valladolid, was among the three most prestigious universities in Spain. In the 19th century, due to political changes and strong advocacy by the liberal government, the university was moved to the capital, Madrid.
