Columbus Tower

Columbus Tower consists of two towering twin towers standing on Columbus Square in the center of Madrid, Spain. Columbus Square is one of the city’s most important commercial hubs. The towers were designed in 1976 by architect Antonio Lamela, stand 116 meters tall, have a total of 23 floors, and are currently the twelfth tallest building in Madrid. The towers once served as the headquarters of the Spanish conglomerate Rumasa.

Columbus Tower features a suspended structural design, with two massive pillars connecting the top platform. Its glass façade is chestnut and green in color, and the tower is topped with a “plug-like” spire. The 23 floors house numerous companies, while the ground level contains shops. According to a Reuters report on December 14, 2008, the website Virtualtourist ranked Columbus Tower sixth on its list of the world’s ten ugliest buildings, based on comments from its editors and readers. The main reason was the tower’s resemblance to a giant salt and pepper shaker set, which stands prominently over the urban skyline and has drawn considerable criticism from local residents.
