Atocha Railway Station is the largest railway station in Madrid. It serves as a major transportation hub to the Mediterranean coastal areas of southern Spain and is also the first railway station in the country. The station was built in 1851 but was completely destroyed in a fire and rebuilt in 1892. As you enter the main hall, although you find yourself in a space with Romanesque architectural style and the familiar dome above, you’re surrounded by exotic plants and palm trees.

Inside Atocha Railway Station, there is a 4,000-square-meter indoor tropical rainforest featuring over 500 plant species, making the station resemble a greenhouse conservatory and a tropical botanical garden. One of the most annoying things about taking a train is the long wait caused by delays — but you can always find a café, sit down, and order a rich cup of coffee. With these lush plants around and the occasional wildlife peeking out from among them, you won’t feel lonely or bored. With the growth of global tourism and the world economy, Atocha Railway Station has become one of the busiest railway hubs in Spain.
