Puerta del Sol is located in Madrid, the capital of Spain, and is one of the city's most famous squares. Originally a city gate in Madrid's city wall, which was built in the 15th century with the suburbs lying beyond it, the gate earned its name because it faces east and is adorned with a rising sun.

Puerta del Sol is situated at the heart of Madrid, with the Plaza Mayor to the southwest, the Royal Palace a short distance away, and ten streets radiating outward from the square. The area around the square is lined with department stores and various shops, making it one of Madrid’s busiest commercial and tourist hubs. The square features many notable landmarks: the former General Post Office on the south side now houses the office of the President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, while a statue of King Carlos III stands to the south. To the north is the iconic "Bear and the Strawberry Tree" sculpture, a major attraction. The steps of the nearby San Felipe Church, known as the Gradas de San Felipe, are famous as a popular spot for people-watching and gossip.

Puerta del Sol connects several commercial and leisure areas, and the surrounding streets are filled with dining and shopping options, making it one of Spain’s well-known tourist and shopping hubs.
