Columbus Square is located in Madrid, the capital of Spain, adjacent to the Castellana Boulevard. Surrounded by high-rise buildings and situated in a bustling urban area, it is one of the most well-known and largest squares in Madrid, and has become one of the city's most visited squares.

Columbus Square was originally called Plaza de Santiago. In 1893, it was renamed to its current name in honor of the navigator Christopher Columbus, and is famous for its exquisite sculptures. The most renowned feature of the square is the Columbus Monument, built in 1885, created by sculptor Antonio Solá. The white statue of Columbus stands atop a 17-meter-high column, facing west—the direction of the New World he discovered—his right hand holding the flag of the Kingdom of Castile, which sponsored his voyage, with a globe beneath the flag. The base of the monument is adorned on all four sides with intricate reliefs related to Columbus’s voyages, all remarkably detailed and awe-inspiring. On either side of the square are massive ship-shaped fountains, each with three sets of water jets. The fountain near the post office on the left represents the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; on the right, a dramatic long waterfall about 200 meters in length cascades downward, complementing the stone hill, the monument, and the fountains beautifully.
