Alcalá de Henares is located in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Spain, just 35 kilometers from the capital city of Madrid. It is the second-largest city in the Madrid Autonomous Community after Madrid itself. The city is one of the earliest-established dioceses in Spain, and its University City and Historic Centre were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
