Alcalá de Henares Prison is located in Alcalá de Henares, in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Spain — just 25 miles north of Madrid and only an hour’s drive away. It is the world’s only prison with family cells and is considered the most humane prison on Earth.

Praised as a “five-star cell,” the facility is intended for prisoners whose spouses have also been arrested but whose children are too young to be separated from their parents. It also serves to educate young offenders on how to care for their children after release. Children living here are aged 0–3 years old and are sent to live with other relatives once they turn 3. These children can live with their parents in a positive environment that poses no negative impact on their development. The walls are decorated with Disney murals, and there are nurseries and play areas to ensure children grow up healthy and happy.
