Sonneveld House

Sonneveld House is located in Rotterdam, a famous port city in the Netherlands, and is considered a prime example of Dutch Functionalism. The Functionalism style originated in the 1920s–1930s and has had a remarkable global influence, especially between the two World Wars.

The design of Sonneveld House was created by the architectural team of Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. In 1929, Mr. Sonneveld wanted a detached house designed for his family, and four years later, the house was completed. It is an ultra-modern building with avant-garde design, and the architects provided a complete interior design for the residence. The home was equipped with state-of-the-art household appliances, making daily life and chores easy and convenient. For example, an electronic bell system was installed on the dining table — with just a push of a button, a servant would promptly appear. The lift leading to the library was also an exceptional household innovation, allowing firewood for the fireplace to be quickly transported from the basement to the library.

In 1997, the Rotterdam Foundation for the Preservation of Historic Monuments purchased Sonneveld House. Starting in February 1999, the foundation collaborated with the Netherlands Architecture Institute to restore the house to its original condition and then opened it to the public as a museum. On March 24, 2001, the museum officially opened, and now the public can visit to see what an ultra-modern apartment from 1933 was really like. In addition, it has become a popular shooting location for many fashion magazines, giving the space a blend of classic, stylish, and modern elements.
