The Netherlands — Announced that starting January 2020, it will officially stop using the nickname "Holland," and fully adopt the country’s formal name, "Netherlands."

The nickname "Holland" actually only refers to regions including cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Rotterdam, while "Netherlands" is the true official country name.

This renaming effort is expected to cost around 200,000 euros (approximately NT$6.7 million). Once the new name is officially implemented, all companies, embassies, foreign ministries, universities, and other institutions must use "Netherlands"; events such as the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest and the Tokyo Olympics will use "Netherlands" instead of "Holland."

This renaming initiative by the Netherlands also aims to alleviate the excessive tourist crowds in Amsterdam. With a population of one million, Amsterdam receives over 17 million visitors annually, creating an imbalance. By promoting the name change, the hope is to redirect tourist attention to more and wider regions.

As for whether Taiwan will change the Chinese name from "荷兰" to something else, according to the Facebook page of the Netherlands Trade and Investment Office, the traditional name "荷兰" will continue to be used in Chinese, just as it has been since the Qing Dynasty.
