When did Amsterdam get a spaceship? From afar, the astonishingly tall circular object stands on flat, unobstructed land, its glass curtain wall embedded with countless round windows, glowing faintly blue at night—how mysterious! It turns out to be the Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam, which has only been open for half a year, and a new work by the architectural firm Benthem Crouwel. This internationally renowned firm has been involved in the design of Rotterdam Central Station, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Ziggo Dome arena. Although the Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam is only 24 meters in diameter, it stands 60 meters tall. No matter which direction you come from, east, west, south, or north, you can see this most eye-catching landmark. The completely glass-clad exterior not only makes it impossible to count the number of floors at a glance, but paired with 2.5-meter-wide circular windows, it resembles a large transparent art form that interacts with the blue sky and white clouds. The double-layered glass structure serves as the best insulation, ensuring the interior stays warm in winter and cool in summer.

The interior design is handled by rising star designer Robert Kolenik, who extends the building’s circular shape to the interior. The 120 guest rooms are like 120 space capsules, featuring central cylindrical pipe-like transparent showers, and flat-screen TVs suspended by symbolic “branches.” It feels like seeing Amsterdam’s forest in a futuristic world. Simple, highly functional, and full of artistic meaning, such a fusion of multiple purposes could only come from the pragmatic Dutch. Eco Chic is another key theme in the hotel’s decor, including water-saving shower facilities, high-efficiency lighting, ceiling-based chilled water cooling systems, fair-trade coffee beans, and chlorine-free paper—all 100% eco-friendly practices that have earned the highest Gold certification from the international Green Key standard.

The 17th and 18th floors of the Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam house the Skylounge Pi and Skyrestaurant Pi, respectively. Pi, the symbol for pi (π) in mathematics, is also a transcendental number. Naming them Pi conveys the infinite possibilities the hotel aims to offer in food and drinks. The decor is also full of creativity—an avant-garde piano over 4 meters long looks like a joyful whale leaping out of the sea. Not only is the piano made from eco-friendly materials, but the hotel also donates to a whale protection foundation, giving even more meaning to the music drifting through the circular space. Countless tiny silver bubble spheres hanging in mid-air reflect on the glass like twinkling stars, serving both as unique ornaments and lighting. Lastly, a little secret for smokers: the 360-degree unobstructed rooftop terrace is the best hidden spot for scenic views.
