When did Amsterdam get a spaceship? From afar, the incredibly tall circular object stands on the flat, open land, its glass façade embedded with countless round windows, emitting a faint blue glow at night — how mysterious!
It turns out to be the Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam, which has only been open for half a year, and also a new creation by the architecture firm Benthem Crouwel. This internationally renowned firm has worked on designs for Rotterdam Central Station, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Ziggo Dome stadium.
The Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam, with an overall diameter of just 24 meters but a height of 60 meters, can be seen from any direction — east, west, north, or south. Its fully glass-covered exterior not only makes it hard to tell at a glance how many floors the building has, but paired with 2.5-meter-wide circular windows, it resembles a large transparent art structure that interacts with the blue sky and white clouds. The double-layered glass structure serves as an excellent insulator, ensuring the interior remains warm in winter and cool in summer.

The interior design is handled by rising-star designer Robert Kolenik, who extends the circular motif of the exterior into the interior. The 120 guest rooms are like 120 space capsules, each featuring a central transparent shower cubicle resembling a cylindrical pipe, and a flat-screen TV hung like a “branch,” symbolically evoking a forest in Amsterdam’s future world. The design is simple, highly functional, and full of artistic meaning — only practical-minded Holland could pull off such a multifunctional fusion.
Eco Chic is another key theme of the Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam’s décor. Water-saving shower facilities, high-efficiency lighting, ceiling-based chilled water cooling systems, fair-trade coffee beans, and the use of chlorine-free paper are just some of the 100% green practices that have earned the hotel the highest Gold certification from the international Green Key standard.

The 17th and 18th floors of the Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam house the Skylounge Pi bar and the Skyrestaurant Pi restaurant, respectively. Pi, representing the mathematical symbol for pi (π), an irrational number, is chosen as the name to convey the infinite possibilities the hotel aims to offer in food and drinks. The decor is also full of creativity — an avant-garde piano over 4 meters long looks like a joyful whale leaping out of the sea. This piano is made of eco-friendly materials, and the hotel donates to whale conservation foundations, giving the music echoing through the circular space even more meaning.
Countless small silver bubble-like orbs hang in mid-air, reflecting on the glass like twinkling stars, serving both as a unique decorative feature and as lighting. Finally, a little secret for smokers: the 360-degree unobstructed rooftop terrace is the best hidden spot for enjoying the view.
