The headquarters of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (Nederlands Architectuurinstituut), abbreviated as NAi, is located in Museum Park in Rotterdam. It is a uniquely designed building, created by architect Jo Coenen, and after a highly controversial competition, it finally opened to the public in 1993. It is one of the largest and finest architecture exhibition spaces in the world, and in fact goes far beyond being just an architecture museum. It is primarily a cultural institution that, while open to the public, employs various methods to engage with issues related to human spatial design.

The building accommodates the institute’s main functions—archives, exhibitions, and staff—in three separate zones, each with its own distinct architectural character and relationship to the surrounding environment. From an architectural standpoint, the building clearly integrates with the existing structures around it. The enclosed, curved archive building separates the quiet park from the bustling street. The museum can be entered via an arcade, which is illuminated at night by a light sculpture by Peter Struycken. A second entrance on the Museum Park side can be reached by crossing a small bridge. Both entrances connect to the lobby, which forms part of the passageway through Museum Park.

Each part of the building’s exterior uses different materials—for example, the main building features a glass façade, while the archive building is clad in steel panels—offering a fresh experience for architecture enthusiasts, students, teachers, and visitors alike.
