Netherlands Photo Museum

The Netherlands Photo Museum was established in 1989 under the original name of the Netherlands National Photo Archive, which was funded and operated by the Dutch government at the time. In 2003, the museum was reborn, now funded and operated by a wealthy Dutch lawyer—Hein Wertheimer—and was subsequently renamed the Netherlands Photo Museum. The museum is located in Rotterdam, housed within the former Holland America Line workshop building—the Las Palmas building.

The Netherlands Photo Museum is the only institution that permanently showcases the history of photography in the Netherlands. It presents a wide range of renowned photographic exhibitions, featuring works from both emerging young photographers and master photographers. Its 129 storage rooms house three million photographic works in various formats such as film, photographs, and slides, covering different mediums in the history of photography as well as images of significant events in the Netherlands during the 20th century. These exhibits present the development of photography from historical, social, and cultural perspectives. Moreover, the photographic works exhibited are not limited to those from the Netherlands but also include outstanding pieces from other parts of the world. The museum regularly hosts photo exhibitions and educational activities, and houses a photo restoration studio and a photo shop. It also introduces its collections and communicates with photography enthusiasts through an interactive website. The museum is open to the public every day except Monday.
