Van Nelle Factory

The Van Nelle Factory is located in the industrial area of northwest Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Built between 1925 and 1931, it represents a pinnacle of modern Dutch architecture and is hailed as the “monument of the modern factory.” As a top example of the International Style, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

In the early 20th century, this site served as a factory for processing coffee, tea, and tobacco products, and later also handled bubble gum, cigarettes, instant pudding, and rice. Today, the factory has been transformed into a hub for new media and design studios. With an elegant environment and unique design, it retains the original industrial elements of the factory building while infusing it with a fashionable cultural and artistic atmosphere. Some areas are even used for conferences, banquets, and other events. This factory is a prime example of a new type of industrial space, symbolizing the culture of modernism and pragmatism, while also bearing witness to the long history of industry and commerce in the Netherlands. Such a large-scale transformation of an industrial plant into a creative park is rare worldwide. The restoration and reuse of the factory have achieved innovation by adapting it to new functional uses.
