St. Michel Church

Introduction St. Michel Church is located on the banks of the Garonne River at the southern end of the old town, facing Canteloup Square. Built in the 14th century, this church, along with St. André Church, is a representative of Gothic architecture in the Bordeaux city area.

The most notable feature in this church is the St. Michel Tower, built in the 15th century and renovated in 1865. This 374-foot-high tower is the tallest Gothic spire in all of France. Climbing to the top offers panoramic views of Bordeaux, and on clear days, you can even see the Atlantic Ocean. The Cloche bell tower, located in the center of Canteloup Square in front of the church, serves as the timepiece of Bordeaux.

The square hosts a lively weekend morning market and flea market. The flea market features many unique items that you absolutely won’t find in tourist shops, and some goods are priced unbelievably low.
