The ultimate ultramarathon for wine lovers: the Bordeaux Wine Marathon where you run and drink

Whether you’re a fan of the manga “Kami no Shizuku” or a seasoned wine enthusiast who’s been around the block, you’ve probably heard of the Bordeaux Wine Marathon in France. This upcoming 29th edition of the ultimate booze-filled ultramarathon—Marathon du Médoc—is also jokingly referred to as the most enjoyable marathon. This year, it will kick off on September 7th in France’s Bordeaux Médoc wine region. The highlight of this marathon is using wine to hydrate and refuel. The full 42-kilometer course winds through vineyards and orchards, passing nearly 60 châteaux, including France’s top five estates such as Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Latour. Thanks to the generous hosts, free-flowing wine is practically a given—just see if you can last till the end.

Fun and feasting are the only rules here. This year, there will be 22 wine stations to keep you hydrated and energized, along with 21 food stops serving treats like oysters, ham, steak, cheese, and ice cream. So no worries about drinking on an empty stomach—and with 52 different activities throughout the course, the event feels more like a lively carnival. This year’s theme is “science fiction,” so participants are encouraged to get creative with their costumes to stand out in this marathon where you run longer, drink more, and eat till you’re full.

 

However, even though it’s called a marathon and covers over 40 kilometers, the organizers make it clear that the focus is on “fun.” So anyone who enjoys sports and finds joy and satisfaction in them is welcome to join.
