Place des Quinconces is located in the center of Bordeaux, a famous city in France. Covering an area of 126,000 square meters, it is the second largest square in the European Union. The square was established in 1820 on the site of the former Château Trompette fortress, with the aim of preventing —. Its shape is an elongated rectangle with a semicircle, and the trees are planted in a quincunx pattern, hence the name Place des Quinconces.

There are two 21-meter-high columns facing the Garonne River in Place des Quinconces; they were erected in 1829, one symbolizing commerce and the other representing navigation. Also standing on the square are white marble statues of Montaigne and Montesquieu, carved by Maggesi in 1858. The main monument in the square was built to commemorate the Girondins who were executed during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. It was erected between 1894 and 1902 and consists of a large base with two basins, decorated with bronze horses and troops, supporting a massive column topped with a statue representing the spirit of liberty. In addition, the square also features a 50-meter-high Statue of Liberty surrounded by bronze reliefs. Place des Quinconces is lined with rows of trees, and there is an observation platform along the riverbank, which offers the best view of the entire square.
