Place de la Bourse

Place de la Bourse is a square in the French city of Bordeaux, designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel and built between 1730 and 1775. The square, also known as the "Royal Square," is a typical example of Bordeaux architecture from the late 18th century. In fact, this square has had many names. In addition to the aforementioned Royal Square, it was also once called "Place de la Liberté" (Freedom Square) and "Place Impériale" (Imperial Square), among others, before being restored to the Royal Square during the Bourbon Restoration. In 1848, during the reign of Louis-Philippe I, the square was finally named "Place de la Bourse" (Stock Exchange Square).

Just from its ever-changing names, one can tell that this square has a certain historical significance. Place de la Bourse was the first section of Bordeaux's medieval walls to be demolished. City administrator Boucher wanted Bordeaux to face the Garonne River, modernize the city, and present a more hospitable side to travelers coming from the right bank of the river. To achieve this, he removed a section of the city walls surrounding Bordeaux and established the Royal Square. The square was inaugurated in 1749 as a symbol of the city’s prosperity. A equestrian statue of King Louis XV was placed at the center of the square; in 1869, it was replaced by the current Three Graces Fountain.

To the north of the square is the Palais de la Bourse, now the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry; to the south is the Hôtel des Fermes, now home to the Customs House and the National Customs Museum. Place de la Bourse is a witness to the history of Bordeaux and of France, and it is also one of the city’s iconic squares.
