Magdeburg Water Bridge

There are always some peculiar and fascinating bridges around the world that shock the globe and attract countless tourists, and Germany’s Magdeburg Water Bridge is one of them. The bridge was opened in 2003, spanning the Elbe River and connecting the Elbe-Havel Canal with the nearby Mittelland Canal in Magdeburg, linking the waterways of eastern and western Germany.

The Magdeburg Water Bridge leads directly to the heart of Germany’s industrial powerhouse, the Ruhr Valley. Stretching 918 meters, it is the longest water bridge in the world — a structure built to span roads, railways, rivers, valleys, or other obstacles. It serves as a transport hub for waterways, railways, and roads. Both the water channel on the bridge and the Elbe River below can accommodate large vessels simultaneously. The opening of the Magdeburg Water Bridge allows ships traveling between the two canals to avoid using locks and detouring around the Elbe River, shortening the navigation distance by 12 kilometers. In addition to serving shipping, the bridge is also open to pedestrians and cyclists.
