Marienplatz
Introduction Marienplatz (Marienplatz) is the central square of Munich. In the middle of the square stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Munich, who overlooks everything happening around her from atop a tall marble column.
To the north of the square stands the Gothic-style New Town Hall (Rathaus), built between 1867 and 1908. Its 85-meter-high tower is home to the famous glockenspiel clock, where at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day, mechanical figures emerge accompanied by music to reenact the 1568 wedding celebrations of William V and the scene of the plague’s defeat.
Not far to the northwest of the square are two famous churches with onion domes, the Frauenkirche, which are iconic buildings of Munich. Transportation Take the S-Bahn from the train station and get off at Marienplatz.
