Celebrate Oktoberfest in Munich, starting from Marienplatz

Munich was founded in 1158, which in German means "city of monks." In 1505, Munich became the capital of Bavaria, and its economy gradually flourished. Unfortunately, the Thirty Years' War and subsequent plague epidemics reduced the city’s population by a third. The famous Munich beer is a must-try for every visitor. The annual Oktoberfest, held every October, envelops the entire city in a festive atmosphere. This year’s Oktoberfest runs from September 17 to October 3, bringing local tourism to its peak.

Aside from attending the famous Oktoberfest in Munich, consider exploring other renowned attractions in the city. Marienplatz is located in the heart of Munich and serves as the perfect starting point for visitors. Centered around this square, key Munich attractions such as the Hofbräuhaus, St. Peter’s Church, the Residenz Museum, and Frauenkirche are all within walking distance. Additionally, Marienplatz is a major transportation hub in Munich’s city center. With nearby department stores, sporting goods shops, as well as numerous restaurants and beer halls, visitors can easily spend a whole day leisurely enjoying the area around the square.

Moreover, the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) on the square features a renowned clock tower at its main building’s center. At 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m. daily, an impressive mechanical clock show takes place. Elaborately designed figures act out historical scenes from Munich’s past to the tune of melodious music. The upper level depicts the wedding of Duke William V and Renata of Lotharingia, while the lower level showcases Munich’s traditional dance, the “Schäfflertanz,” attracting many tourists to stop and watch.
