Autumn in Korea: A Stunning Maple Spectacle – 2011 Fall Foliage Guide

Traveling to Korea in autumn, the most anticipated sight is the vibrant red maples. Whether you're strolling along the golden ginkgo stone path of Deoksugung Palace in Seoul, exploring the colorful Mount Seorak, or visiting Baekyangsa Temple at the base of the maple tunnel in Naejangsan, every corner is filled with a romantic atmosphere.

The dates for peak foliage are determined based on the extent of color change. The start of the foliage season is when 20% of the leaves have changed color, while the peak period refers to when 80% of the leaves have turned. From the initial color change until one week after the peak, you can enjoy the brilliant foliage.

This year, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that the start of foliage will be about one to five days later than the average, but the peak period is expected to arrive earlier than last year. As the foliage-viewing season moves from the northernmost Mount Seorak down to Songnisan and Naejangsan, and then further south to Hallasan on Jeju Island, if you want to start your foliage adventure early, you can begin as early as October 3 by taking a leisurely morning hike up the less strenuous trails at the foot of Mount Seorak to fully enjoy its stunning maple scenery. Alternatively, you can take the 1,200-meter Gwongeumseong Cable Car for a breathtaking aerial view of Mount Seorak’s autumn splendor.

Naejangsan National Park, ranked as the top scenic spot on the Korean Peninsula, attracts over a million visitors each autumn. Stroll along the maple leaf tunnel at the park’s entrance, formed by maple trees aged 50 to over 200 years, where the entire mountain is dyed in shades of red. In the southern part of Naejangsan, Baekyangsa Temple is surrounded by massive rocks and mountain peaks, with clear streams flowing nearby. The red maples, yellow zelkova trees, and crystal-clear waters create a scene resembling a colorful ink painting. The predicted start date for foliage viewing is October 26, with the best foliage day expected on November 7. Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy the spectacle.
