International Cooperation / Taoyuan Airport and Munich Airport Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperative Exchange

On the afternoon of February 24 (Munich time), Taoyuan International Airport Corporation and Munich Airport GmbH signed a sister airport memorandum of understanding on cooperative exchange. The two sides conducted exchanges and mutual visits based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit, and common development, sharing information related to airport passenger services, marketing, aviation security, and new technologies, and will also work toward expanding direct flights between Taoyuan and Munich in the future.

Munich Airport was opened in 1992, with an annual passenger volume of 40.98 million in 2015, making it an important hub airport in Europe, where the transfer passenger rate is as high as about 40%. In 2015, Munich Airport was ranked third in the world's best airports by Skytrax, boasting top-tier passenger service facilities, efficient service processes, and comprehensive airport information to meet the needs of various types of travelers.

Taoyuan International Airport Corporation is actively advancing the construction of the Third Terminal Area. In 2015, it selected a team comprising “Taiwan CECI Engineering Consultants, Inc., Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Ove Arup and Partners Hong Kong Limited, and Fei & Cheng Associates” to carry out the design of the Third Terminal Area, aiming to create a Mega Terminal consisting of Terminal 3 and a multi-functional building. The multi-functional building, located between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, will integrate various functions such as a transportation hub, shopping, entertainment, and office spaces.

The Munich Airport Center, located within Munich Airport between the two terminals, combines multiple commercial uses including a train station, check-in counters, retail and service spaces, a conference center, and offices. It also features a large outdoor plaza that hosts various Munich Airport promotional events from time to time, including the Munich Oktoberfest and surfing competitions, making it a highlight of airport activities. The development vision of the Munich Airport Center is similar to that of the multi-functional building in Taoyuan Airport’s Third Terminal Area. Through the signing of the sister airport agreement for mutual cooperation and exchange, Taoyuan Airport can draw on its successful experience as an excellent reference for its own development, which will be greatly beneficial for enhancing the overall service quality and revenue of Taoyuan Airport.

In addition to learning from Munich Airport’s commercial operation model and operational efficiency, the signing of the sister airport memorandum of understanding between Taoyuan International Airport and Munich Airport also expands collaboration with other benchmark airports. Currently, key sister airports of Taoyuan, such as Hong Kong and Munich, are renowned for their high operational efficiency and offer many valuable insights. In the future, Taoyuan International Airport will continue to promote the signing of cooperation memoranda with other benchmark airports and keep moving forward on the path of international collaboration.
