One of the world’s grandest annual festivals – the Munich Oktoberfest – will be held from September 21 to October 6. In 1810, Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese held a royal wedding, and all Munich citizens were invited to join in the fun. The wedding venue was at what is now Theresienwiese (meaning “Princess Therese’s Meadow”), where people drank, partied, sang, and danced day and night. Though over two hundred years have passed and times have changed, the tradition and name have been fully preserved. Locals still call the Oktoberfest “die Wiesn” (“the meadow”), as if returning to that royal wedding meadow.

 

Every autumn in Munich, various celebrations are held, and their scale has gradually expanded over time, eventually evolving into the world-famous Munich Oktoberfest. Tens of thousands of tourists flock from all over the world during the 16-day festival, joyfully joining in the festivities surrounded by carnivals, amusement rides, farmers’ markets, music performances, and gathering under massive tents to sing loudly, eat hearty meats, and drink heartily, all to celebrate this German traditional event that has lasted for over two centuries.

This beer is not just a party drink for toasts; its brewing method and process must comply with the “Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law)” established back in the 16th century, which stipulates that all beer can only be brewed using the purest ingredients (water, barley, and hops) to ensure the quality of beer produced in the region. Fun fact: a total of 8 million liters of beer are consumed during the Oktoberfest every year!
