State Collections of Antiques

The State Collections of Antiques is situated in Munich’s Art District and was founded in 1848. It is a museum that collects, preserves, and displays art from ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The museum’s initial collection came from the antique collections of the Wittelsbach dynasty, especially vases from the time of King Ludwig I, and has since grown significantly in both quantity and scale.

The State Collections of Antiques is a neoclassical building featuring Corinthian columns and an imposing façade. Its collection includes glassware, bronze ware, terracotta, jewelry, silverware, and gold items. The museum’s antique ceramics are particularly renowned, rivaling those in the Louvre in France and the British Museum in the United Kingdom. The museum showcases Mycenaean pottery excavated from ancient Greece, originating from four distinct periods in Greek history, all of exceptional beauty. The artworks on display are created by well-known Greek and Roman potters and painters, whose wisdom and exquisite craftsmanship are vividly reflected in the pieces, leaving visitors in awe.
