Bürgersaalkirche

The Bürgersaalkirche is located inside Munich’s Karlstor, immediately east of the Jesuit Church of St. Michael. It is also known as the “Bürgersaal Church” because since its consecration on May 13, 1778, it has been informally referred to as such. Since 1778, the hall has been used as a church.

The interior of the Bürgersaalkirche is divided into an upper and a lower church. The upper church (Oberkirche), which served as the citizens’ hall, still features the unrestored ceiling fresco “Assumption of the Virgin” (by Martin Knoller). Since it was not originally intended for religious services, the main altar is located to the north. The lower church (Unterkirche) consists of three windowless rooms built in the late 19th century. Visitors can admire the high altar relief of the Annunciation and the group sculpture of Guardian Angels. The exquisite reliefs and elegant carvings are truly breathtaking.
