Introduction Union Square is situated in the bustling downtown district of San Francisco. In the center of the square, there is a prominent monument commemorating the U.S. Navy’s triumph over the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on May 1, 1895. The vicinity of Union Square is a shopper's paradise, featuring numerous large stores and luxury brand outlets. The square is surrounded by four streets: Powell, Stockton, and Geary.

Following the fashionable Maiden Lane leads to the only building in San Francisco designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (currently a gallery, closed on Sundays)—the Folk Art International Monument. Powell Street is very lively—shoppers, street performers, and tourists gather around the Cable-car turnaround. San Francisco’s Theater District is also located not far southwest of Union Square. Transportation: The site is accessible by getting off at the Powell tram stop.
