Guide   At the time, Leland Stanford Sr., a California railroad magnate and former governor, decided to donate funds to establish Stanford University in memory of his son, who passed away from an illness while traveling in Italy. He also offered his 8,180-acre ranch, which had been used for training elite racehorses, to be the school's campus.    Introduction: Stanford University was founded in 1885 as a private American institution of higher learning, with Leland Stanford as its founder. The university comprises seven schools: Humanities and Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Business, and Education. Approximately half of the student body consists of undergraduates, and the other half are graduate students. In addition, the university houses a Food Research Center, the Hopkins Marine Station, and five overseas campuses located in Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Austria, where over half of the undergraduate students can spend a semester. There are also advanced research centers in Europe and Asia.
